Listening note-taking shorthand

Lectures move at 130+ words per minute. Trying to write full words is a guaranteed loss of detail. Use shorthand, capture structure, and abbreviate ruthlessly.

Word abbreviations

  • gov't (government) • edu (education) • envi (environment) • tech (technology)
  • Drop vowels: "prblm" (problem), "dvlp" (develop), "rsch" (research).
  • Use first 4 letters for proper names: "Newt" (Newton), "Egyp" (Egypt).

4-column note layout for TOEFL lectures

  1. Column 1 — Main topic (top of page, all caps).
  2. Column 2 — Subpoints (key claims, theories, definitions).
  3. Column 3 — Examples (linked back to subpoint with arrows).
  4. Column 4 — Cues ("?", "contrast", "important") for review.

What to capture (and what to skip)

  • ALWAYS capture: definitions, dates, names, lists, contrasts ("however", "in contrast").
  • Skip: filler phrases, repetition, the professor's anecdotes (unless they illustrate the main point).
  • Always note when the professor changes topic with a transition word.
