Study tips for IELTS General

  • Skim notices and adverts first; the answers usually appear in the same order as the questions.
  • Match your letter's tone to the audience: formal, semi-formal, or personal.
  • Use a clear paragraph for each bullet point in the letter prompt.
  • In Speaking, give a reason and an example for every short answer in Part 1.

IELTS General FAQ

IELTS General: frequently asked questions

Who should take IELTS General Training instead of Academic?

General Training is for migration to English-speaking countries (UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand), workplace registration, or secondary education. If you are applying to a university, take IELTS Academic instead.

How is General Training Writing different from Academic?

Task 1 is a letter (formal, semi-formal, or personal) instead of a chart description. Task 2 is an essay similar to Academic but on more general topics.

What band score do I need for migration?

It depends on the country and visa class. Australian skilled migration often asks for 6.0 in each band; UK Skilled Worker requires CEFR B1 (around 4.0 – 5.0). Check your specific visa requirement.

Does FluentMock include formal letter practice?

Yes. The General Training Writing section includes complaint, request, application, and informal letter prompts with tone and structure guidance.
