Study tips for IELTS Academic

  • Spend exactly 20 minutes on each Reading passage — do not over-invest in passage 1.
  • For True / False / Not Given, decide if the statement is contradicted, supported, or simply not mentioned.
  • In Task 1 Writing, focus on the main trends; do not describe every data point.
  • In Speaking Part 2, use the 1-minute prep to write keywords for past/present/future/feeling.

IELTS Academic FAQ

IELTS Academic: frequently asked questions

What IELTS Academic band score do universities require?

Most undergraduate programs ask for an overall 6.0 – 6.5; competitive postgraduate and medical programs often require 7.0 – 7.5 with no band below 6.5. Always check your target program's exact requirement.

How is IELTS Academic Reading scored?

Reading has 40 questions across three academic passages in 60 minutes. Your raw score (out of 40) converts to a 0 – 9 band. Roughly: 30/40 ≈ band 7, 35/40 ≈ band 8.

How can I improve my IELTS Academic Reading score?

Focus on three things: timing per passage (about 20 minutes each), recognizing common question types (matching headings, True/False/Not Given, summary completion), and building academic vocabulary. FluentMock's review queue surfaces the question types and words you keep missing.

Does FluentMock include IELTS Writing and Speaking practice?

Yes. Writing tasks include Task 1 (chart/graph descriptions) and Task 2 essays with rubrics and model structure. Speaking includes Part 1 questions, Part 2 cue cards, and Part 3 discussion prompts.
